In the course of his musical development Friedrich Cerha has lived through quite varied stages. About Fasce, composed in 1959, he remarked: "At the time Fasce was written I was well aware that in my country there was no chance of seeing a composition with this instrumentation and of this level of difficulty... performed." Today's ensembles have long since become familiar with works of such complexity, above all the RSO Wien, which performs more contemporary music than any other of the major Austrian orchestras. The Violin Concerto (2004) might almost be regarded as a work inspired by the "wisdom of old age:" "Who knows whether a musical work can smile wisely. But at the Wiener Konzerthaus, as with a tiny lapidary punch line in the shape of a rising phrase Friedrich Cerha's violin concerto elegantly drifted sort of skywards, one was ready to believe it – and almost felt like hearing in the surprising finale of this new work a counterpart to Verdi's Falstaff and the famous words 'All the world's a joke!'
