Michael Denhoff is obviously not content with small forms: after his cycle Hebdomadaire. 52 pieces of the year for a pianist, he refined the temporal range and proceeded from weekly works to daily miniatures, which he then expanded to monthly pieces.
Denhoff's source of inspiration was Paul Klee's painting Hauptwege und Nebenwege, which fascinated him especially by the "exceptional musicality of its pictorial composition." ...

... It did actually take Denhoff one year to complete the work. The music was intended to "subdivide the space of time that it sounds out, both minimal units of 365 miniatures corresponding to the days and broader formal contexts of twelve parts corresponding to the months. And as a whole, a sound-path should develop, initially of unforeseeable duration, then linking itself with itself and nesting in itself and fitting together to form a great whole." Denhoff developed the correct "balance between what was spontaneous and what was planned" only in the course of his work on the composition; in the end, each of the twelve parts was allocated its own universe of sound, for instance by including percussion instruments (first appearing in part V) or recitations of brief texts (in part X). "Hauptweg und Nebenwege has to me become a kind of conclusion of a confession-like nature, a conclusion which at the same time has revealed new and strange fields and, thus, has expanded and enriched the inner map in unexpected ways." (Michael Denhoff)
Recommendation
Gnomic Variations: conciseness from the inside of a piano. Processional is driven by an incessant pulse, whereas Ancient Voices is based on poems by Garcia Lorca.
From subtle irony to direct provocation: Satie, the complacent gentleman with a hat and goatee, meets the "pianist-futurist" Antheil.
