These two brilliant contemporaries did not collaborate or adapt to each other in any traditional sense, but rather creatively acknowledged the affinity of their respective artistic visions. The movement within stagnation, the unchangeable within a process, are transformed into sound here: the enhancement of intensity by reduction. It was not least Beckett's working method that encouraged Feldman to write pattern music: "There are many, many people who work this way, but in other fields. Samuel Beckett, not in everything he does, but in a lot of things he does. [...] He wrote something for me in 1977, and I got it. I'm reading it. There's something peculiar. I can't catch it. Finally I see that every line is really the same thought said in another way. And yet the continuity acts as if something else is happening. Nothing else is happening. What you're doing [...] is getting deeper and deeper saturated into the thought." (Feldman) So, embark on the experience of Feldman's Neither, interpreted to perfection by the soprano Petra Hoffmann.
