If it hadn't been for Vienna, this melting pot of the peoples and music of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Arnold Schönberg as we know him would never have been: this is amply borne out by our second new release, an intelligent and entertaining collaboration between Klangforum Wien, an ensemble of performers well versed in all musical styles, and the unique voices of Renate Wicke and Walter Raiffeiner. The cleverly planned compilation switches from the traditional Schrammel repertoire to Schönberg's serenade to extracts from the "Pierrot lunaire" and on to the contemporary, represented by Friedrich Cerha's charming and sarcastic chansons; and as you listen to the music astonishing references and cross-connections are revealed, and a harmony rises to the surface, reminiscent of the sweet sadness pervading the wine-soaked air in an old Viennese tavern...
