“the greatest joy ...”
This album might be described as a kind of personal audio storybook by Gerald Preinfalk, and a celebration of his woodwind instruments in a whirlwind of musical collaborations anerent approaches. One of the starting points for this project was a conversation with Harri Stojka during a long ride on the tour bus. Talking about their various other jobs, Preinfalk mentioned his involvement with Klangforum Wien as well as his professorship for classical saxophone at the Graz Music University, which triggered Stojka’s astonished reply: “Classical saxophone? There is no such thing, surely!”

Preinfalk has been studying the status of this instrument for a long time. So often it is misunderstood, apparently caught between two stools, the classical concert genre on the one hand and jazz performance on the other. Consequently, a mutual ting and a drawing of inspiration from the respective “other” style is one of the essential assets of this production.

This album is governed by two guiding principles. For the first part Preinfalk has selected those works of classical saxophone music that he regards as most striking. On the recordings he is accompanied by the wonderful pianist Iren Seleljo (track 1-8). The second part features six compositions presented in a duo outfit, in saxophonist Preinfalk’s opinion “the greatest joy in making music.” In collaborations with Alegre Corrêa, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Per Mathisen, Fabian Rucker, Christoph Cech and Harri Stojka he explores this creative and intimate seedbed of music.
