In this case, the master is not a singer at all. Franz Winter, actor and director, embarks on Richard Wagner's The Master Singers of Nuremberg, all by himself – no orchestra, no singers, no stage set. For three hours, he has Hans Sachs, Walther von Stolzing, Beckmesser, Pogner, the entire Guild of Master Singers, the apprentices, and Eva chatter animatedly and passionately; and by reading out all stage directions, he also supplies imaginary action on an imaginary stage. Wagner's own verdict about the Meistersinger libretto, pronouncing it to be "an exception, and per se a really good play, even without music," is confirmed by Franz Winter (once in a while supported by a few organ harmonies). This live recording of a performance at the Tyrolean Festival Erl makes a gripping and entertaining audio book and continues col legno’s series of spoken Wagner on disc after Sven-Eric Bechtolfs reading of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen

Recommendation
The 2nd audio book from the artist released with col legno, read by Wolfram Berger and with music from our treasure chamber – audio entertainment beyond compare.
Franui & Bechtolf, Brahms & Horváth! Highly recommended.
Sven-Eric Bechtolf, the actor and theater and opera director, interprets Wagner’s original texts for his Ring des Nibelungen – "a logopedical circus act."
