One of the pieces that are based on ancient musical forms and that can even be traced to a composer of the past is Ave Christe: Josquin, “is an elegant, very simple recasting of a portion of a motet by Renaissance master Josquin des Prez”. In his Third Piano Sonata Wuorinen also allowed himself to be influenced by Carter, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and others: “Of course, I was continuing my strenuous efforts to combine certain architectural aspects of the big scale, which, in the Western tradition has been associated with the development form, with the vocabulary of the extended pitch relations of today,” says Wuorinen. The smaller-scaled pieces, Bagatelle, Self-similar Waltz, and Album Leaf were composed with particular purposes in mind. The waltz, e.g., was composed for a collection of waltzes, and Bagatelle for the New York debut performance of pianist Elissa Stutz. “It should be evident from this disc alone that Wuorinen’s knowledge of and passion for older contrapunctal music … is his music’s anchor to the past and one part of his ‘Secret Art’. … It has been my privilege to be involved with the launching of some of these works and to be an advocate for this brilliant composer.” (Alan Feinberg)
